Anyone coming into the room could see that you didn’t want to to talk. You may not have wanted to speak but you were communicating. Just as you were communicating,so were those people who decided not to speak to you. Verbal messages are either sent or not sent, just as a light switch is either on or off. They have an all-or-nothing feature built in. nonverbal cues are not as clear-cut. 2018-5-19 郭玉锦 guoyujin@126.com 4 Nonverbal communication includes such behaviors as facial expressions, posture, and gestures, and paralanguage—the vocal but nonverbal aspects of speech. Paralanguage consists of voice qualities such as pitch, rate, and inflection. Just as a dimmer switch on a light can be used to adjust intensity, nonverbal cues often reveal shades or degrees of meaning.
