ABSTRACTThroughusinganewintakecamshaftandVVT(variablevalvetiming) mechanismonanOttocycleengine,werealizeAtkinsoncyclewhichadoptsLate IntakeValveClosingstrategy.WealsochangetheOttocycleengine’spistonstonew pistonswhichhaveahighercompressionratio.Comparativeanalysisofexternal characteristicanduniversalperformancebetweenOttocycleandAtkinsoncycleis carriedout,andthistwokindsworkingcycles’combustioncharacteristicisalso investigated.ThenweaddanexternalEGR(ExhaustGasRecirculation)systemtothe Atkinsonengine,andweattempttostudytheEGR’sinfluenceonfueleconomy, combustion characteristic and emission characteristics.Atfullloadspoints,closingAtkinsonengine’sintakevalveinadvancecanmake ithaveanexcellentoutputperformancewhichisnearlyasthesameastheoriginal Ottoengine.Atkinsonengine’sfullloadsoutputonlyhaveaslightdeclinewhenthe rotatespeedisunder3000rpm,butthedeclineissmallerthan5%.Atalloperating points,Atkinsonengine’sBSFC(BrakeSpecificFuelConsumption)islowerthanthe originalOttoengine.TheareaenclosedbyAtkinsonengine’s250g/(kW?h)contour lineisnearlytwicethantheoriginalOttoengine’s.Theeffectivecompressionratioof Atkinsonengineathigh-speedhigh-loadpointsishigherthantheoriginalOtto engine, thus Atkinson engine has a higher thermalefficiency.Attheoperatingpointof2000rpm/0.2MPaBMEP,Atkinsonengine’sBSFC declines10.2%thantheoriginalOttoengine.BecauseAtkinsonengine’spumploss reduced28.5%,andit’sexpansionratioishigherthantheoriginalOttoengine.But comparedtotheoriginalOttoengine,Atkinsoncycle’smaximumcombustion temperatureincylinderdeclines,themaximumcylinderpressuredeclines3.92%,and thepeakofheatreleaseratiodeclines17.4%.Thetotalcombustionperiodhasbeen extended16%.Butthedeclineofcombustionphaseresultsinmoreheatrelease focusingon theworkingstroke and improves the thermal efficiency.GuidingrightamountofEGRtotheAtkinsoncyclecanmakefueleconomy better.Atthespeedof2000rpm,threeloadpoints(0.2MPa,0.4MPa,0.6MPa;BMEP) havebeenselected.EveryoneofthesethreepointshasanoptimalEGRratio,which canresultstheBS
