Struckel President/Geologist Geosearch Logging, Inc. “Since 1983” Hydrocarbon Well Logging INTRODUCTION Hydrocarbon well logging is one of the most widely used contract wellsite services, but it is also one of the most misused sources of downhole data. The primary objective of hydrocarbon well logging or “mud logging” is to detect, position, and document with respect to depth, all beds of rock and hydrocarbon accumulations encountered while drilling. This objective is accomplished through the continuous detection and analysis of hydrocarbons contained within the drilling fluid, the analysis of drilled cuttings as drilling progresses, and the synthesis of the collected data into a master log and show reports. The proper understanding and use of this wealth of knowledge greatly enhances the ability to identify and recover hydrocarbon resources. Another objective is wellsite safety (Plate 1). The hydrocarbon well logger may be able to detect conditions leading to dangerous pressure situations before they are detected by other means. The underutilization and misapplication of hydrocarbon well log interpretation often stems from a lack of understanding of the basic mechanics of hydrocarbon liberation and detection. With an understanding of how hydrocarbons become entrained in the drilling fluid and how they are detected, you, as geologists and engineers will be able to make use of the hydrocarbon well log as a valuable source of downhole data.
