The History of the United Kingdom Early Settlers 1. By 3000 BC (公元前3000 年 ), the Iberians (伊比利亚人) came to Britain from the eastern and southern coasts of the Iberian peninsula. They lived in isolated communities based on a tribal organization. They also had a knowledge of metal-working, including bronze (青铜加工术) , and agricultural techniques. Early Settlers 2. By 2500 BC (公元前2500 年 ), the Beaker folk (大杯人 ) had established themselves in Britain. They came from the areas now known as Holland and the Rhineland (莱茵河流域 ). They are named for their characteristic pottery and are noted for their bronze tools and their huge stone monuments, especially Stonehenge (巨石柱 ). Early Settlers 3. In the 1st millennium BC (公元前1000 年 ), the Celts (凯尔特人 ) overran the British Isles. Celtic warriors were farmers when they weren’t fighting. Roman Britain 1. In 55 and 54 BC , Julius Caesar (皑撒 ) made two expeditions to Britain and made many of the native tribes to pay tribute(贡物)and give hostages(人质)in return for peace. Roman Britain 2. In 43 AD , Roman Emperor Claudius (克劳狄斯) I invaded Britain in force and occupied England and Wales. Roman occupation lasted from 43 AD to 410 AD for nearly 400 years. The Anglo-Saxon Anglo-Saxon (盎格鲁-撒克逊人 ) is the term usually used to describe the invading Germanic peoples (日耳曼人) to the south and east of Great Britain from 445 to 871 AD. The Anglo-Saxon(446-871) Old English, sometimes called Anglo-Saxon, was the language continued to be the common language of England until after the Norman Conquest of 1066.
