Common Characteristics Goals – the purpose of the company Structure – rules and regulations, writing job descriptions People – make decisions and perform tasks to achieve the goal Efficiency and Effectiveness Efficiency Relationship between inputs and outputs Why? : Input resources (money, equipment, people) are scarce Effectiveness Ability to complete tasks Question for thought Can you be efficient and NOT effective at the same time? Yes, by doing the wrong things well. Examples? The Management Process Planning – defining goals and establishing a strategy to reach them Organizing – determine which tasks to do when, how, and by who Leading – motivate employees, direct others, resolve conflicts Controlling – monitor progress of activities Managers and Management Organizations Managers work for organizations. Organization = group of people with a common purpose Every organization has: Goals Structure People Managers and other employees Management Management is the process of getting things done. The process involves Planning – identifying goals and strategies Organizing – delegating tasks Leading – motivating and directing workers Controlling – monitoring progress and making corrections The 2 E’s of Management We want to get things done efficiently and effectively.
