Introduction The proper performance of infrastructure is essential for supporting security, economic prosperity and social well-being, particularly in industrial societies like the UK. However, achieving this is, and will continue to be, a difficult challenge. The present UK infrastructure is subject to ever increasing loads due to population growth and suffers from deterioration, which makes it more vulnerable(ICE, 2010). In addition, the infrastructure must adapt to climate change; weather-related hazards, such as floods and heatwaves,are projected to increase in frequency and intensity(UKCP09). Numerical models that simulate infrastructure performance may significantly assist in the development of such strategies.
