Chinese Calligraphy ? Few nations in the world have calligraphy as a form of art. In China, Calligraphy, or shufa, is one of the four basic skills and disciplines of the Chinese literati (文人), together with painting (hua), stringed musical instruments (qin) and board games (qi ). Chinese Calligraphy ? What is Calligraphy? Who are the greatest calligraphers? What are the main character styles? What can we read in a calligraphy work? International perception of Chinese calligraphy Calligraphy is even widely accepted by the West. Had I been born Chinese, I would have been a calligrapher, not a painter. --Picasso International perception of Chinese calligraphy Koreans and Japanese love brush calligraphy as it is an important treasure of their cultural heritage. “Calligraphic” contests are still held in many Japanese schools as a tradition. Japan rewards its best calligraphic artist with the national Wang Xi Zhi award. Paperweights--used to hold down paper. Brush rest- used to hold extra brushes. * Chinese Culture ---- Chinese Calligraphy The most outstanding calligraphers in ancient China Wang Xizhi王羲之 (303–361) Wang Xizhi was a Chinese calligrapher, traditionally referred to as the Sage of Calligraphy. 《兰亭序》 Wang Xianzhi 王献之 (344-386) 《洛神赋》 Ouyangxun 欧阳询 (557一641年) 楷书四大家(欧阳询、颜真卿、柳公权、赵孟頫 ) 楷书《九成宫醴泉铭》 The calligraphy style, Yan, is the textbook-style that every calligraphy lover has to imitate today. Yan Zhenqing (709–785)颜真卿 Zhang Xu张旭 (714—756) Zhang Xu was known as one of the Eight Immortals of the Wine Cup.
