A Course of English Grammar for English Majors Autumn, 2008 English Department, School of Foreign Languages Cultures, NNU Course Description: attendees This is a two-semester course on English grammar for the college students who major in English as a foreign language in China and most of them will become teachers of English in the future. The situation leads to the learning objective with three different levels. Course Description: objectives The elementary: to expand or enrich what has been known about English grammar; to systemize the understanding of English grammar; The intermediate: to speak and write more accurately; from grammar to grammaring; The advanced: to know why some aspects of the English language are the way they are; to consider why Chinese learners tend to make errors or mistakes with respect to some grammatical phenomena; and to know how to design an reliable and valid test on English grammar. Course Description: contents A general survey of what English grammar is and what English grammar is not: the study on the structural system of the English language centering on the key construction of clause. The constructions below clause: studies on the structures of words and phrases. The construction above clause: how clauses are combined together to form sentences. The construction beyond clause: how texts or discourses are formed on the basis of clauses and sentences.
