Here is an enlarged image of the North Sea to illustrate this (the image requires careful inspection to see the faint but widespread wave crests): Temperature variations are major factors in the development, strength, and directional behavior of moving atmospheric gases (winds). Their prevailing motions change over time, but tend to follow certain preferred paths in various parts of the world. Wind directions are determined indirectly by relating them to the patterns of waves they produce, especially in the open seas. Data from the scatterometer on Seasat helped to generalize wind patterns over the Pacific Ocean, shown in this image: Map of the worlds oceans floor as acquired by the Seasat satellite. The mid-Atlantic ridge runs down the middle of the ocean floor separating Africa from North and South America. As shown here, a succession of great ridges runs through all of the worlds ocean floors, although not always in the middle. (Courtesy of William F. Haxby, Lamont-Doherty Geophysical Observatory, Columbia University.) 2, ERS-1/2 The image on the left is a terrain corrected ERS-1/2 C-band SAR mosaic of the Bering, Malaspina Glacier systems and the glaciers of Icy Bay, south-central Alaska. The SAR images were acquired in the summer of 1995. The calibrated sigma-0 values have been scaled in an 8-bit range with a color table applied. The sigma-0 values correspond to surface roughness and changes in the material dielectric constant. The colors as seen correspond closely to C-band SAR glacier facies.?
