Unit 6 Healthy LivingText A What Is Health?1What Is Health? The World Health Organization of United Nations describes health as “ a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. ” Perhaps this description is not realistic; after all, people are not a race of super beings.2A far more realistic definition of health is proved by the Joint Committee on Health Problems in Education on the U. S. National Education Association and the American Medical Association. According to the Joint Committee, health is M a condition in which the individual is able to mobilize all of his resources intellectual, emotional and physical—for optimum living. ” What is referred to here is the best possible use of one’s assets, however great or small they may be. This is a definition that can apply to the great majority of individuals. It f* will hold for particularly favored individuals, for those of average or less-than- average physical and mental development, and even for the handicapped persons who have come to terms successfully with their disabilities.Guidelines for the Individual3To a considerable extent, the individual is responsible for his own health. He I must establish a definite pattern of healthful living if he is to maintain a satisfactory level of well-being. There are some basic guidelines to follow to reach and maintain this level.4Schedule regular visits to your physician and pi dentist. They are vital—even if you- feel fine. The frequency of visits depends on the individual’s age and general state of health.5Keep in tune with your body. Familiarize yourself with the warning signs of illness and seek medical I attention promptly if you should become ill. Follow H medical instructions carefully and be sure to allow p adequate time for recovery from illness.6Eat a diet that provides a proper balance of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. This will give you | minerals that you need for daily activities.7Maintain pr
