Understanding new words Sometimes you may not know the words you read and you have to guess the meaning of them. There are two main ways to help you understand the meaning of an unfamiliar word. 1. Examine the context around the word. The context may help you understand the meaning of the word. The position of the word in the sentence can help you identify the type of the word. e.g: The Gome Group grew into a company renowned for undercutting its competitors on a daily basis and employing shock tactics whenever it entered a new market. One such move is the selling of rice cookers for as little as nine yuan – creating a buyer stampede. Planning a romantic night out, a family celebration or a solitary dinner?  2. Examine the word. Prefixes (e.g. over-, re-, multi-) can give part of the meaning of the word. Suffixes (e.g. –ly, -ship, -ment) can help you decide on the type of the word. Exercises: 1. Look at the prefixes below. What meaning do they give a word? Answer: (1) un- can mean not, as in unprofitable (2) bi- can mean two, as in bilingual (3) sub- can mean below, as in sub-standard (4) dis- can mean not, as in disagree (5) inter- can mean between, as in interview (6) pre- can mean before, as in predict, preview, prepare 2.
