综合英语Book V Unit 6
Pre-reading initiation You are now a third-year student. Can you still recall the days when you prepared yourself for admission to university? Did you memorize a large amount of materials so that you could pass the entrance examination? Or were you opposed to such examination-oriented preparation? Why? Lincoln Steffens, the author of the text, is apparently against the standardized way of preparation. How did he prepare for college? And what are the paragraphs covering this? --- He begins his article with his failure in a number of examinations required for entering the University of California and the cause of the failure. --- paras. 1-4 In-reading interpretation (paras. 1-4) Why did the author fail in the entrance examinations for the University of California? What does the author mean by “the wrong school” and “the right school” in para. 1? Why did the author envy those boys that the the schools, colleges and the world are made for? Why was he often glad that he was not of them (= he was not like them / not of their kind)? In-reading interpretation (paras. 1-4) What kind of students are the elect according to the author in para. 2? --- passive learning: whatever teachers tell them to learn --- mechanical memorization: understand or not --- strange learning motives: not for curiosi
