Free Reading Walt Disney and Cartoons 1 Walt Disney and cartoons grew up together. Cartoons are really older than motion pictures themselves, but they were slower to change and grow. When Walt was young, cartoons were hardly more than a series of black-and-white lantern slides. One “still” picture after another was shown no faster than a person could put the frames one by one in and out of a projector. Motion, sound, and color were all in the dream stage. 2 Cartoons as we know them grew from those early lantern slides. First there were motion pictures in black and white.
