(see the Brad DeLong article, as part of the reading for this class session) Why does “modern” start in 1978? (it doesn’t) Many approaches to studying economic history- history of cities, history of clothes, history of ideas, history of cars. History of prices of silk in China. History of silk technology. History of individual nations and comparative history- how does growth in China compare with growth in the US, or Japan or Korea? We will take a national approach- China alone- and add some detail from the history of other countries. Chinese Modern Economic History Information - Requirements - attendance; reading; questions; midterm and final exam; properly formatted paper on a topic to be arranged with the instructor in advance. The paper is important. You are supposed to be scholars. You should be able to think and write like one. Text: The Chinese Economy: Transitions and Growth.
