On Jane Eyre’s Rebellious Spirit 张梅 湖北随州 随州职业技术学院 Abstract: The paper attempts to discuss the rebellious spirit of the heroin in Charlotte Bronte’s novel Jane Eyre through the analysis in four periods of her experiences: childhood at Gateshed; girlhood in Lowood charity; adolescence in Thornfield, and maturity at Ferndean. Her special character is developed step by step. Key words: Jane Eyre; rebellious spirit; freedom; dignity. The novel Jane Eyre was written by the British novelist Charlotte Bronte. Since the publication of Jane Eyre, it was received with warmth and gained acclamation. During the time, Jane Eyre was being widely read on both sides of Atlantic. In New England, it produced for some months a time called a “Jane Eyre fever”. It had attracted a great deal of admiration: Thackeray described it as “the master work of a great genius” (Charlotte Bronte, 1985, 10), in 1848, when it was in the third edition, the Quarter Review referred to “the equal popularity of Jane Eyre and Vanity Fair” (Charlotte Bronte, 1985, 10). The influential critic George Lewes declared it “the best novel of the season” (Charlotte Bronte, 1985, 10). Why is Jane Eyre so popular at the time that it is still welcomed by people after a century? Because it created a heroine “could be interesting without being beautiful –” (Charlotte Bronte, 1985, 11) Jane Eyre, who was quite different from the traditional women that willingly endure oppression, characterized by her rebellion; she had always been striving for her independence, equality and freedom. Jane Eyre was written in an autobiographical way aiming at representing how the embittered little charity –child found the way to come to terms with life and society through her rebellious sprit and marvelous courage. The novel moved from stage to stage of Jane Eyre’s development, divided into four sharply distinct phases: childhood at Gateshed; girlhood, which is schooling at Lowood; adolescence at Thorn field; maturity at Marshend, winding
