BA Dissertation Linguistic Features of English News Headlines BA Candidate 杨琳 Supervisor 郑诗成 West Anhui University April,2011 Abstract Newspapers are regularly published periodicals produced for a particular town, city or region, reporting current affairs to the public. A newspaper story is usually composed of three parts: the headline, the lead and the body. A headline is an indispensable component of a news report. The headline is the title of the storythe words that will be read and draw great attention. It is a digest or a condensation of the whole story. Readers, using headlines as a guide, scan the newspaper, searching for clues to stories that interest them. Headlines are quite essential for English news. They are the windows of news. This paper describes the types of headlines and also explains the features of headlines. Firstly, introduction of headlines can give readers a perceptual knowledge. Secondly, in order to give readers some rational knowledge about headlines, this paper then explains language features of news headlines, i.e. grammatical features, lexical features and punctuation are often used in headline. It also gives examples of rhetorical characteristics such as metaphor, contrast, rhyme, pun, metonymy and paradox and so on. News media is the best channel of knowing every field including politics, economics, science, culture, and society. This thesis aims to help English learners know English news well and read news efficiently. And this thesis introduces language features of English news headlines, so as to make it possible for the Chinese readers to learn about the world by using the headlines. Key words: English news headlines, features 中文摘要： 定期出版的报纸是为城市或地区生产的期刊，报道时事给公众。报纸通常由三部分组成：标题，导语和主体。一个新闻标题是新闻报道不可或缺的组成部分。标题是故事的开始，将会被予以高度重视和借鉴，它是领悟和凝结整个故事的关键。读者通常会以标题作为向导，浏览报纸，寻找他们感兴趣的故事。 新闻标题在英语新闻中占有十分重要的地位，可谓是新闻的概要，也是新闻的窗口。本文就新闻标题进行了全面的归类和分析。首先，描述了标题在形式上的分类，给读者对新闻标题有一定的感性认识；然后再进一步说明了新闻标题的语言特点，如标题中常见的语法，词汇和标点符号的特点。同时也对新闻
