Figures of Speech 第一组 辛蓉、张丹、苏杰、皮海涛、王鹏 Figures of Speech If words in English are used in their original meanings, they are used literally; if they are used in extended meanings to make comparisons or produce impressive effect, they are used figuratively. There are different ways to use words figuratively and these ways are called figures of speech. Figures of Speech 1.Simile(明喻) Simile is a figure of speech in which two essentially unlike things are compared, which is usually indicated by the word as, as…as, as if, as though, or like. Figures of Speech [Emp.] 1.They are like streetcars running contentedly on their rails. 2.He is as white as a sheet. 3.The little boy jumped as if he had been stung. Figures of Speech 2.Metaphor (暗喻) Metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase that ordinarily designates one thing is used to designate another, thus making an implicit comparison. In other words, metaphor is an implied comparison between two distinctly different things without the use of the word as, as…as, as if, as though, or like. Figures of Speech [Emp.] 1.Experience is the mother of wisdom. 2.He has a heart of stone. 3.The newcomer was trapped in a sea of troubles. Figures of Speech 3.personification (拟人) Personification is a figure of speech which treats a thing or an idea as if it were human or had human qualities. Figures of Speech [Emp.] 1.The flowers nodded to her while she passed. 2.My heart was crying. 3.My only worry was that January would find me hunting for a job again. Figures of Speech 4.Metonymy (转喻) Metonymy is a figure of speech substituting the name of one thing for that of another with which it is closely associated. In this sense, the White House can stand for the American government or president, the crown for a king, and the bottle for alcohol. Figures of Speech [Emp.] 1.The mother did her best to take care of the cradle. 2.His purse would not allow him that luxury. 3.The White House has restarted its position in Sin
