As an elective course, its vocabulary covers a wider range and is more obscure. However, instead of offering a higher demand on the vocabulary, phrases or grammar, it is used to broaden students’ horizon and improve their reading skills. This passage is a segment from Pride and Prejudice which is one of the most famous classic works of Jane Austin. In this scene, Mr. Darcy proposed marriage to Elizabeth, but she declined his offer and broke out a quarrel with each other. Despite of the new words, story is relatively readable to the students. Therefore, to generally understand the content is quite easy. However, I would like to focus on how to get the specific details in a passage efficiently by scanning.Students Analysis: Before students learn this lesson, they have already finished the compulsory courses. Students have generally mastered the grammar of complex sentences, such as nominal clauses, adverbial clauses, relative clauses and so on. Therefore, to analyze the sentences is an easy job to them. Nevertheless, if too many new words in the material, they maybe inclined to read the passage again and again until they thoroughly understand it, accounting for the unsatisfactory performance on exam. Most of the students have this reading habit no matter what kind of questions they have to solve. It was because they have no idea of reading skills like scanning and skimming.
