24 (1) : 2944, 2002 29 2 3 Research paper The Utilization and Degradation of Wood Estimated from Academy of Hsing-Hsien of Yuan-Lin in Changhua 2 3 Jen-cheng Lin Kuo-jung Hong Abstract The object of this investigation was to estimate the kinds of wood using and wood degradation, and to find the cause of damaged due to degrade. We found that the materials of wood column used with Taiwan zelkova wood, and another materials of wood column adopted with Camphor tree, China fir and Taiwan red cypress in the mail hall. All purlin main used China fir, the jib and door header employed with Camphor tree, SHU-TZU units were build with Camphor tree and Incense nanmu wood. The decay resistant and insect resistant of wood column of Taiwan zelkova were higher than another woods, however irregular crack check was caused by damp on the ground, and insect pest and decay were observed when wood used with China fir. No apparently degraded by termite and decay fungi of red bark oak, however the abnormal longitudinal cracking of wood surface can be found.
