Institute ofD isaster Prevention Science and Technology, Sanhe 065201, China) Abs tract: For better earthquake disasters prevention and reduction, based on the theory of symbology, this paper first defines earthquake symbology and gives an explanation of its content which is composed of three aspects: a syntactical aspect, a semantic aspect and a pragmatics aspect in accordancew ithMorriss trichotomy. And then the research situation of earthquake symbology inmany countries such as China, Japan andAmericawas introduced as well as analyzed, follow ing which the sourceswhere the earthquake symbols come from, the functions and the ap- plications of earthquake symbology were further explored. M eanwhile, it is pointed out that the research on earth- quake symbology not only plays an mi portant role in expressing, communicating and sharing the earthquake informa- tion but also has great significance to the earthquake em ergency response.
