An alien exploring Earthwould probably givepriority tothe planetsdominant,most- distinctivefeature-theocean.Humanshaveabias towardlandthat sometimesgetsin the way oftruly examining global issues.Seen fromfar away, it is easy torealizethat landmassesoccupy only one-third ofthe Earthssurface.Given that two-thirds ofthe Earthssurfaceis waterand thatmarine life lives at all levels ofthe ocean,the totalthree- dimensional living space oftheocean is perhaps100 times greaterthan that ofland and containsmorethan 90percent ofall life onEartheven thoughthe ocean hasfewer distinct species. Thefact that half ofthe known species arethought to inhabit the worldsrain forestsdoes notseem surprising, considering the huge numbersofinsectsthatcomprisethe bulk of the species. Onescientist found many diffe
