入殓师 Okuribito Departures Film Review A film that touches your soul A film review of 入殓师 DEPARTURES （Okuribito）, directed by Yojiro Takita泷田洋二郎running 130 minutes, is a Japanese movie describing the living people’s attitude to death from a very specific prospective. Up to March, 2009, 6 months since its debut, the director has pocketed 68 awards. This Japanese film DEPARTURES, would be obscure for me if it were not because of its having won the 81st Oscar best foreign language film. First of all, it is always hard to understand a job like the one giving the cosmetic treatment for the dead before they are cremated. Second, it is always difficult to write a film review for a Japanese film partly because of their name—very complicated to make out from both English and their correspondent Chinese characters. It is said that he standard Chinese characters being used now add up to some 2000 in Japanese; however it is difficult to learn the hirakana 平假名and katakana 片假名 related to these Chinese characters. Anyway, the hero in the film is called Daigo Kobayashi （小林大悟，本木雅弘Masahiro Motoki饰）. He used to be a cellist playing cello for Tokyo orchestra. But there was a very small audience attending the concert. One day, the manager announces that the orchestra dismissed. He was crushed at the breakup of his band and, to make matter worse, he has just spent a fortune on a new cello instrument running up to 19 million Japanese yen. He and his beautiful and kind-hearted and most adorable wife Mika (美香，Ryoko Hirosue广末凉子饰) have to retreat to his picturesque northern Japan countryside home left behind by his mother, to save the rent money in the city. He is guilt-ridden because he didn’t tell his wife that he spent such a large amount of money on the cello. The expensive cello is eventually sold. One day, he comes by an ad from the newspaper saying to the effect that age unlimited, high salary guaranteed, paid by actual hours, working with departures, an NK agent, and so on. (“年龄不限，
