A ll of the medi ines are either in lini al trials or await ing review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Skin is the largest organ of the human body and, along with hair and nails, prote ts the body. It prevents germs from entering the body and damaging internal organs, supports all other body parts, and plays a role in maintaining the immune system. The skin also helps to regulate body temperature through the sweat glands and is responsible for the sense of tou h. The new medi ines today in the resear h and development pipeline offer hope for redu ing the human and e onomi osts of the many skin diseases affe ting Ameri ans. They in lude: • 74 for skin an ers, in luding 63 for melanoma, whi h affe ts more than 68,000 Ameri ans ea h year. • 60 for skin and soft tissue infe tions, whi h a ount for nearly 14 million outpatient visits ea h year. • 41 for psoriasis, whi h affe ts about 7.5 million people in the United States.
