1.1 Research Background
From the English examinations of various levels and types in recent years, it iseasy to find that reading takes a considerable proportion among the ination paper. The cultivation of reading ability has draent. Therefore, it is necessary and realisticto put forents for English reading teaching in senior highschools. Traditional approach to English reading teaching emphasizes more languagethan strategy; emphasizes more test than ability. This approach cannot help studentsform good reading ability. By contrast, the mode of guided learning plan is based onNational Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development Plan Outlineand Full-time Ne Standard of Ordinary Senior High Schools.Its objectives are to improve students prehensive quality,cultivate studentsinnovation spirit and ability of practice,and promote fundamental change of e Ne Standard of OrdinarySenior High Schools explicitly points out that course design and implementationneed to be helpful for students to optimize their English leaming styles. Throughobservation, experience and exploration,they can give full play to their o effective learning strategies, and improve the ability of autonomouslearning. Specific to reading,Full-time Ne Standard ofOrdinary Senior High Schools has a detailed description on senior high schoolEnglish reading goals at different levels (refer to Appendix I ).
