Abstract: During theW enchuan earthquake on M ay 12, 2008, National Strong Motion Observation Newt ork Sys-
tem ( NSMONS) ofCh ina captured hundreds of strong-motion records, and in the periodmore than 10 thousands of
aftershocks occurred. In this paper, the mob ile strong-motion observation for the d isastrous earthquake is intro-
duced. Follow ing the aftershock characteristics and the spatial d istribution, 59 strong-motion instrumentsw ere in-
stalled along the Longm enshan Fau lt, and more than 3000 groups of 3-chs record have been accumulated. The
strong- motion data for aftershocksw ere collected and prelmi inary analysisw as done, w h ich w ill benefit the fur-
ther research, such as the near-field strong-motion characteristic and attenuation relationship. Finally, the causes
of abnormalw aveform w ith respect to a few of records are exp lored prelmi inarily, and wt o possible explanations have
been presented. This observation task show s that it is necessary to perform the mobile strong-motion observation a-f
ter the destructive earthquake and the collected precious data cou ld be app lied to further research.
