Concise Western Furniture historyEarly EuropeAlong with the other arts, the Italian Renaissance of the 14 and 15 century marked a rebirth in design, often inspired by the Greco-Roman tradition. A similar explosion of design, and renaissance of culture in general, occurred in Northern Europe, starting in the 15 century. The17 century, in both Southern and Northern Europe, was characterized by opulent, often gilded Baroque designs that frequently incorporated a profusion of vegetal and scrolling ornament. Starting in the 18 century, furniture designs began to develop more rapidly. Although there were some styles that belonged primarily to one nation, such as Palladianism in Great Britain, others, such as the Rococo and Neoclassicism were perpetuated throughout Western Europe.19th CenturyThe 19 century is usually defined by concurrent revival styles, including Gothic, Neoclassicism, Rococo, and the Eastlake Movement. The designreformsof the late century introduced the Aesthetic movement and the Arts and Crafts movement. Art Nouveau was influenced by both of these movements.The Eastlake Movement was a 19 household design reform movement started by architectand writer Charles Eastlake (1836–1906). His book Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery, and Other Details posited that furniture and decor in peoples homes should be made by hand or machine workers who took personal pride in their work. Manufacturers in the United Statesused the drawings and ideas in the book to create mass-produced Eastlake Style or Cottage furniture. The geometric ornaments, spindles, low relief carvings and incised lines were designed to be affordable and easy to clean;[1] nevertheless, many of the designs resulted in being artistically complex.
