Grammar-translation Audio-lingual method Communicative Language Teaching Task-based Learning Grammar-translation Grammar-translation is a foreign language teaching method derived from classical (sometimes called traditional )method of teaching Greek and Latin. The method requires students to translate whole texts words for words and memorize numerous grammatical rules and expectations as well as numerous vocabulary lists. Advantages 1. Translation is the easiest way of explaining meanings, words or phrases from one language to the other. Learners acquire some sort of accuracy in understanding synonyms in the source of language and target language. 2. Teacher’s labor is saved. Since the textbooks are taught in mother tongue, the learners may not have much difficulty in responding to teacher’s questions and understanding what teachers said in class. Communication between teacher and learner does not cause linguistic problems. Even teachers who are not fluent in English can teach English through this method. That is perhaps the reason why this method has been practiced so widely and has survived so long. Disadvantages 1. It is an unnatural method.
