The Chemical Abstract Machine Grard Berry Ecole Nationale Sup rieure des Mines de Paris Centre de Mathmatiques Appliques SophiaAntip olis Valb onne France Grard Boudol INRIA SophiaAntip olis Valb onne France Octob er Abstract We intro duce a new kind of abstract machine based on the chemical metaphor used in the language of Bantre and Le Mtayer States of a machine are chemical solutions where oating molecules can interact according to reaction rules Solutions can b e stratied by encapsulat ing subsolutions within membranes that force reactions to o ccur lo cally We illustrate the use of this mo del by describing the op erational se mantics of the TCCS and CCS pro cess calculi and of the fragment of Milner Parrow and Walkers Calculus of Mobile Pro cesses used by Milner to enco de the lamb dacalculus We also give ideas on how to extract a higherorder concurrent calculus out of the basic concepts of the chemical abstract machine Intro duction We present the notion of a Chemical A bstract Machine or cham suited to mo del concurrent computations We show that chemical abstract machines can implement known mo dels of concurrent computation such as algebraic pro cess calculi Milners Mobile Pro cesses calculus and a concurrent calculus similar to the one presented in Abstract Machines Abstract machines are widely used in the classical theory of sequential com putations Turing Machines or Random Access Machines are primary to ols within the theories of recursive f
