Methods:T he serum levels of IL-6 w ere measured by ELISA in 36 pa- tients w ith acute cerebral infarction at one, three and seven days after stroke onset and in 32 cases of healthy control. Result s: T he serum IL-6 levels in the patient group were significantly higher at day one and day three than that in ( 0. 01) . ( 0. 05) . control group P T he difference betw een two groups w as not statistically significant at day seven P The increased serum IL-6 levels had significant correlat ion w ith the infarct volum e and the degree of neurological deficit. Conclusion: IL-6 may have an import ant role in t he diagnosis and prognosis of acute cerebral infarction.It can be used as a prognostic tool to predict the size of the brain damage before it is possible to accurately visualize it w it h radiological met hods.
