W hen read ing it, th e fix ated text d isapp eared w h en readers fix ate on it som e tim es latter. T h en it d isappeared until th e reader fixated on other text, an im m ed iate refixation on the current text did not resu lt in it reapp earing, but if reader fixated other text, it reappeared . T h e sentences u sed in tw o experim ents w ere all com posed of 7 to 10 tw o-ch aracter w ords. T he stim u li w ere balanced according to a L atin-square design in each exp erim ent. O ur m an ipu lation s are as fo llow ing :E xperim ent 1 contained four disappearin g cond itions and a contro l. In d isapp earing cond ition s, the fixated w ord n disappeared after readers fixate on it 40/80/120 or 160 m s. Exp erim ent 2 contained four disappearing conditions and a control also . In disappearing condition s, th e w ord n+ 1 disapp eared after readers fixate on w ord n 4 0/80/120 or 160 m s. A group of young adu lts and aged participanted the tw o exp erim ents. W e found that (1) both w ord n disappearing texts and d isappearin g texts o f w ord n+ 1 d id not influence th e total reading tim e for young adu lts, but the pattern s of eye m ovem ent. (2) also the tw o disappearing texts changed the old peop les eye m ovem ent pattern s as the young adults, but both disapp earing texts interrupted readin g seriou sly to th e aged. A t last w e w ou ld get th e tw o conclu sion s : (1) young adu lts C h inese readers can parallel processing w ord n and th e w ord n+ 1.
