T h e m aterialist app roach h igh lights factors such as geograph ical p o sition , com phrensive pow er, and the com parison w ith surrounding nation s ; from th is vievvpo int, ideas, includ ing ideolog ies, are just tools in disgu ising real intentions, so hardly can ideas b e seen as indep end ent variab les in decisionm ak ing . W h ile the Idealist p ersp ective stresses th e im portance of ideas, b oth in defin ing national in terests and gu iding state b ehav iors ; and it believes that p olicies frequ ently are m ade accord in g to som e values, even though that m ay m aterially endan ger the n ational in te re sts. T h is dissertation tries to ju stify that, the influence of ideas on foreign policy param ounts w h en political interests are not clearly-defm ed, especially w hen a b eliever ho lds asym m etric pow er. Ideas, in the form s of w orld ou tlook and princip lized b eliefs, particip ates the cogn ition of national interests, and clarifies th e value standard s that b in ding foreign po licies. F irstly th is dissertation w ill unfold the correlation b etw een N ehru s b eliefs, and th e Ind ias p ost-indep endence d ip lom acy. W ith these d iscoveries, con clusion s are m ade th at N ehru s ideas do in flu enced Ind ia both in defin ing n ational interests, and in design in g foreign po licies. T he N ehruian diplom acy is m ajorly realistic in safeguarding Indias national interest, how ever, it also sm ells idealistic, especially on the issu es such as m aintaining international peace, declon ization, and th e prom otion of inter-state m orals.
