She was 25. She never married and never had any children. She reigned as Queen for 44 years until her death on March 24, 1603 at the age of 69. Elizabeth I Her reign is considered one of the most glorious in England’s history. Her name became a synonym for the era which she dominated. Elizabeth I was aware that the tension between Catholics and Protestants is ruining the society so she tried to reach a middle ground. What she did was that she restored Protestantism back as the official religion with giving some rights to the Catholics at the same time. Therefore, there were two religious factions in society. Known as the Virgin Queen, or Gloriana. Elizabeth I Developed a compromise to please the Roman Catholic and the Protestant churches; probably saved England from religious wars She funded voyages of discovery to the Americas; expeditions prepared England for an age of colonization and expansion。(The English Navy defeated the Spanish Armada) Under her reign, the arts flourished; miniature painting was at a high point and the theater thrived. Elizabeth gave the name to a golden age of poets, statesmen and adventurers. Globe Playhouse, London Renaissance Tudors Stuarts James I The Civil War Charles I In 1628 Charles I was forced to accept Petition of Rights. In 1629 Charles dissolved (got rid of) Parliament and then ruled without them for the next 11 years until 1640. Because Parliament voted to grant him custom duties for 1 year
