His representative work Honggaoliang Jiazu was rendered into its English version Red Sorghum: A Novel of China by the celebrated sinologist Howard Goldblatt. Howard Goldblatt didn’t follow the traditional belief that “Faithfulness goes first”. He rewrote the original text. In this paper, the author attempts to analyze the manipulation phenomena in Red Sorghum: A Novel of China from three perspectives: ideology, poetics and patronage under the theoretical foundation of André Lefevere’s manipulation theory. Meanwhile, the author collects 16 manipulation cases through the comparative study between the original work and the translated version by Howard Goldblatt and systematically analyzes them within the framework of manipulation theory. Hea then finds that Mo Yan adopts many culture-related expressions in Honggaoliang Jiazu which usually cause readers’ misunderstandings and these expressions are manipulated most by adopting many translation strategies to guarantee that the translated version’s ideology, poetics and patronage are consistent with those of the target language culture and cater for the target readers’ aesthetic needs and value orientation. This paper consists of five chapters. Chapter one is an overall introduction to this paper. Chapter two presents the literary review of the manipulation theory of translation and offers a view into the previous studies on Honggaoliang Jiazu and its translated version. In chapter
