Abstract Abstract Aviation plays an important role in the development of Chinese economy. Because of the differences in culture, society and language, effective communications in this field between China and other nations inevitably require the presence of translators and translations. This translation practice centers on The Pilot’s Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge(FAA-H-8083-25A) published by FAA, U.S.A. The report of this practice consists of four parts. Task description introduces the source of the original material which is at a proper level of difficulty. The translation of this material will be of great value to pilots. The second part is about the translation process: the heavy loads of preparation is the foundation of good translation, difficult problems have been checked and analyzed afterwards as key points, and translation drafts have been checked and rechecked by the translator, friends and teachers. After all these steps, the translation will be finalized. In the third part, the characteristics of aviation English and the thinking of the translator will be discussed and shown with the analysis of some important and troublesome cases at lexical, syntactic and cultural levels. This is the most important part in this report. The conclusion is stated at the fourth part. It is a necessity for translators to have good and sound knowledge about the English and Chinese languages and the specialized field.
