A comparative study on common animal metaphors between English and Chinese School number: 0940028 Name :杨金宏 Class: class (2) 摘要： 由于在人类生活中人与动物关系密切，因而在汉英语言中动物除了代表本身所具有的意义外还有因其特性所被社会赋予的特有的寓意，从而形成了众多与动物相关的含有特殊寓意的词汇。而人类利用动物的各种特点来反映人类自身不同的性格特点，这就构成了动物词语的隐喻。然而由于中英地理环境，思维方式，生活方式，社会习俗，以及文化背景的不同，所以在中英文化中动物隐喻中不仅存在着相似之处，更有大量的差异突显，以及文化空缺现象的存在。本文仅以汉英语言中常见的动物为例进行对比研究并揭示该研究对英语教学，跨文化交际，和对英汉互译这三方面所产生的重要影响以及其重要意义。 Abstract: The relationship between human beings and animals is so closed in the human daily life that people can easily find that amounts of vocabularies related to animals exist in Chinese and English ,which not only refer to the animal themselves but also possess special meanings given by the society. And people utilize the animals various characters to reflect peoples own different characters which has developed the animal metaphors. However, as a result of the great differences between English and Chinese, such as geographic environment, cognitive process, social customs, and cultural background, there are also numerous differences existing in the animal metaphors, as well as the similarities, and the culture vacancy between English and Chinese. This article aims to research this phenomenon through comparing metaphors related to common animals between English and Chinese. This article also tend to revel the importance of the research to the English Teaching, cross-cultural communication, English –Chinese translation. Introduction the definition of metaphor A metaphor is a kind of figure of speech which is widely applied in English and Chinese. So what is metaphor?
