Unit 4 TV programmes Comic strip and Welcome to the unit Teaching aims: To practice the dialogue between Hobo and Eddie To learn about TV and TV programmes Teaching procedures: Step 1 Lead-in Make a quiz to know how much the students know about TV. The teacher can give some pictures or TV models. Step 2 Wlcome to the unit Talk about TV and raise some questions to get the students to work out. Help them if they can’t find out the answers. Then ask the students, “What TV programmes do you watch often? Can you give us more names of TV programmes?” and show many pictures to help them learn new names of TV programmes. Step 3 Discussion Discuss their favourite TV programmes and give them a new expression—couch potato. Step 4 Comic strip Listen and answer, “Is Eddie a couch potato?” Read and talk about Eddie—Is he really too busy? What makes Eddie so fat? Teach language problems. Step 5 Debate Is it good for the students to watch TV in their spare time? Step 6 Exercise Do some exercise to consolidate. Reading 1-3 Teaching aims: To learn about TV guide To improve the abilities of reading and speaking Teaching procedures: Reading 1 Step 1 Lead-in Show the students a newspaper of TV guide and make sure they can read it correctly—quick to know what programmes are on for different channels. Give some simple guide to get the students to read and learn some key information—When to be on, What channel, What is it about, etc. Step 2 Listening Listen to the tape and try to finish the form below. Time About what Programme Channel Then read the book and complete the form. Step 3 Reading Read the first two passages and answer some questions. 1.
