The linguist David Wilskins once said, without grammar, very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary, nothing can be conveyed. So it is necessary for English learners to learn some useful vocabulary. But when facing with so many unfamiliar words, learners often feel confused and tedious. Therefore, this paper will discuss some major means of word-formation, such as affixation, conversion, compounding, blending, clipping, acronymy, back-formation and reduplication; and their enlightenments on vocabulary teaching and learning in the hope of finding an effective method for vocabulary learning.
