Shakespeare’s Influence on Modern English Language Vocabulary Blank Verse Figure of Speech Vocabulary He promoted the formation and development of the early modern English by creating a large vocabulary of 16000 English words and phrases. William Shakespeare expressed new ideas and distinctions by inventing, borrowing or adopting a word or a phrase from another language (Greek and Latine) Change parts of speech In his plays, he changed parts of speech. Modern English Poor/rich the poor/rich The use of prefix and suffix smirch besmirch (弄脏,弄污) During the period of 15th century, smirch had the meaning of “to soil or discolor”, Shakespeare used the word in his works As You Like It. Then he added “be” in front of “smirch” in his famous play Hamlet. Blank Verse Definition: verse written in unrhymed iambic pentameter. Shakespeares blank verse is one of the most important of all his influences on the way the English language was written. He used the blank verse throughout in his writing career experimenting and perfecting it. The free speech rhythm gave Shakespeare more freedom for experimentation. Expressing emotions and situations in form of a verse gave a natural flow to language with an added sense of flexibility and spontaneity. Figure of Speech 1.
