Ethical and communication considerations Developed by Vanessa Lee, Clinton Schultz Remember There is no homogeneous Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture or community structure There fore there are not always absolutes in terms of best practice Use common sense and courtesy Communication is the key All Australians have a right to health care and service which fit their needs – these needs include cultural needs. A Social and emotional wellbeing framework must be considered Obligation to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have culturally appropriate choices Individual, family and community rights need to be considered What is community? Who defines community? Should the people who belong (or might belong) to a community decide what it is and whether they are in or out? Or is it social scientists and professional people who really decide who is part of a community? Are all communities linked to specific geographical areas? What about ethnic communities? Are there communities of interest? Is community a thing? a system? a process? Is community a thing which exists apart from us? Or is it something that we are part of? Or is it something that we do together? “when we use the word ‘community’, what we are doing is establishing a symbolic boundary around a class of people. That is, we are using language to mark a difference between people inside and those outside the ‘community’”. ?? Cohen (1985) ???? ?
