The structure and nature of Norske QI Ice aker, the southern ary of the Northeast ater summer polynya, is deduced from Landsat 5 TM images. ‘vt’itbin cbe barrier, three main areas are identified: glaciers to the west, a permanent central ice region made up of fast ice and a variable zone of attached pack ice. Keywords: Arctic: polynya: sea-ice: glaciology The Northeast Water (NEW) summer polynya, located on the shelf northeast of Greenland, is current-driven and shelteredby a fast ice barrier pcrpendicular to the driving force. This causes a divergence of ice floe velocity and hence open water downstream of the barrier (Schneider and Buds, 1997this volume). Local winds are weak during summer and occasional stormy outbursts only play a modifying role in the distribution of open water and ice coverage (Gudmandsen et al., 1995) but do net contribute to the polynya formation. The northward flowing waters of the NorthEast Greenland Coastal Current (NEGCC) pass underneath Norske G?)erIce Barrier (N0IB) and this constitutes the dominant forcing of the Northeast Water summer polynya. Hence N plays a major role in the formation of the polynya. This ice feature is situated at about 79” 30’ N and extends roughly 60- IO0 km perpendicular from the coast. It was first observed by och in 1938 (Koch, 1945). A medium re NOAA-AVHRR survey by Schneider and i 1995) demonstrated that N@IB was in place at least since 1983, however, significant interannual variations in size and horizontal extent occurred.
