A sentence fragment is a phrase or clause that is punctuated and capitalized as a sentence but does not constitute a complete grammatical sentence. Although strict grammarians are firmly against the use of sentence fragments, they can be a very powerful tool in rhetoric, if used sparingly. As we can see, the style of the text is very informal, which is largely due to the use of colloquial language such as sentence fragments, thus giving a sense of familiarity to the readers. Besides, the writer deliberately uses these sentence fragments to create some other related effects as follows: Appreciation “Perfect for the young couple moving in” is used after a long sentence introducing the bungalow. Short and concise, this fragment highlights the quality of being “perfect” of the house, and immediately sets up the informal tone for the whole text． Fragments in L.18-21 are three examples showing that “everything elicits a memory.” These fragments are just like a vivid reflection of what Beth is recalling, offering snapshots of reminiscence and sadness． “One. Two. Three. Lift” is a faithful record of how Tommy and his friend are cooperating when moving furniture. This true-to-life description adds much vividness to the text． Appreciation 4. In L. 18, you can read “The front door painted red for good luck.” Then in L. 101102, you can read “They close the door—the one that, years ago, they painted red for good luck—and carefully lock it behind them.” Why does the writer repeatedly mention the “red front door”? Did the door bring the Mackies good luck? Appreciation The repeated mentioning of the red front door formed an echo, making the text unified and coherent.
