Course Title: Chinese Character Writing I Course Code: FS 103 Credits: 2 Teaching hours: 32 Prerequisites: No Semester: Fall and Spring Semester Course Description This course is designed especially for beginners to master basic Chinese strokes, notes on Chinese characters, Chinese radicals and components which will help the students understand Chinese characters easier and faster. It also offers the chance to practice writing Chinese correctly, identify Chinese characters through stroke order, and help students build up vocabulary skills through combining radicals and components. The students will master 300 basic Chinese characters. Aims and Objectives The main objectives of this course are to analyze Chinese characters strokes, structures and components, know how to imitate the strokes, and understand the structure and rules of writing as well as the origin and development of Chinese characters. Learning Outcomes: On completion of the course a student should be able to Understand Chinese character strokes Know Chinese character stroke order, structure and rules of writing Identify 300 basic Chinese characters Identify some radicals Teaching Methods: Teaching methods will involve a combination of formal lectures, individual practice, and group work. Students will be encouraged to practice traditional Chinese calligraphy. Assessment: Final Examination 60% Class participation and performance, homework and weekly quizzes 30% Attendance Check 10% Total 100% To achieve a pass grade in this course, students must obtain 60% or more as an aggregate mark on the assessment. Examination content There will be a 100-minute- examination at the end of the semester. The examination is designed to cover the learning outcomes and to test skill development.
