Unit 5 Text A The Nightingale and the Rose I. Teaching Objectives 1. To help the students obtain a good understanding of Text A; 2. To let the students master the usage of key words and key expressions; 3. To familiarize the students with the use of rhetorical device; 4. To inspire the students understand the implied significance of life and the real meaning of love in the text through the discussion on Oscar Wilde’s fairy tale The Nightingale and the rose. II. Teaching Procedure 1. Word study (pp105-107) 2. Text A 3. Grammar: The usage of degree of adjective and adverb 4. Exercises (pp111-119) III. Time Allocation 1. Pre-reading activities and background knowledge (2 period) 2. Detailed study and explanation of Text A (3 periods) 3. Classroom discussion and Exercises (3 periods) IV. Teaching Approaches 1. Pre-reading activities 1) Ask the students to go over the text rapidly once without worrying about the new words and phrases, Notes on the Text and Glossary before we start the new lesson; then ask the students to answer the questions on Page 107, and discuss the main idea of the text and the structure of the text. 2) Encourage the students to speak truthfully about what is the significance of life and what is the meaning of love. Does love mean taking or giving? Does love mean rich or power? What is true love in Oscar Wilde’ s opinion? 3) Let the students read the text in different roles and inspire them to imitate the characters of the text in different voices, feelings and understandings. 2. Background knowledge 1) About the author Oscar Wilde and the text In 1871, Oscar was awarded a Royal School Scholarship to Trinity College in Dublin. Again, he did particularly well in Classics, earning first in his examinations in 1872 and earning the highest honor the College could bestow on an undergraduate - a Foundation Scholarship. In 1874, Oscar crowned his successes at Trinity with two final achievements.? He won the Colleges Berkeley
