With the rapid development of technologies, 3D printing provides a platform for a new way of production: the cost of 3D printing is much lower and the duration of converting designs and ideas into tangible objects is much shorter. Using 3D printing, products do not require molds and can be manufactured immediately. The designs which are considered to be impossible to make in the past can be easily printed.There are various kinds of 3D printers: Reprap, Ultimaker, etc. The principle of operation of the 3D printer in our project is basically the same as an inkjet printer. The material will be heated to around 200 degrees Celsius and melt. The motors on the printer will adjust and position the nozzle. Then the melt material will be ejected to print a cross-sectional shape of the object. Then different layers accumulate to form an object.Our project mainly aims at designing and building a functional 3-D printer, possible improvements includes 3-D scanner, enabling input of real world objects, and computer aided design, incorporated with multiple subject areas. There are available designs but we will make modification to it and design our own one.Our plan is: First, the assembly of a functioning machine and how can we improve the design; Second, original 3-D modeling using software; Third, investigate how different materials affect the output,Relevant Prior Learning:The principles of operation of 3-D printers.
