Learning Objective 1: Tell What are the stages of team development? Learning Objective 2: Define How do individuals become team players? Learning Objective 3: Explain How can groups become effective teams? Learning Objective 4: Explain What are some of the current challenges in managing teams? * Learning Objective 1: What are the stages of team development? The behaviour of a team is not simply the sum total of the behaviours of all the individuals in the team, because individuals act differently in teams than they do when they are alone. If we want to understand organizational behaviour more fully, we need to study teams. Work teams are two or more interacting and interdependent individuals who work on a specific, common goal using their positive synergy (combined efforts that are greater than the sum of individual efforts), individual and mutual accountability, and complementary skills. Employees also belong to informal groups. Unlike work teams or groups, these informal groups have no need or opportunity to engage in collective work that requires joint effort. Informal groups are social and occur naturally in the workplace in response to the need for social contact. Learning Objective 1: What are the stages of team development? Cross-functional teams: Made up of employees who are experts in various functions; task interdependence is limited as each member works with other employees in different departments. Problem-solving teams: Made up of employees from the same department or functional area who are trying to improve work activities or solve specific problems. Self-managed teams: Consist of employees with high autonomy who are responsible for an entire work process or segment. Unlike a problem-solving team, this team is also responsible for managing itself. Advisory teams: Teams that provide feedback and recommendations to organizational decision makers. Virtual teams: Teams that use information technologies to link physically dispersed members. Learning
