Sources and Types of Solid Waste Sources of Solid Waste Categories: Residential Commercial Municipal Industrial Open area Treatment plants Agricultural Types of Solid Waste The term solid wastes is all-inclusive and encompasses all sources, types of classifications, composition and properties. Wastes that are discharged may be of significant value in another settling, but they are of little or not value to the possessor who wants to dispose of them. To avoid confusion, the term refuse (垃圾), often used interchangeably (可交替的)with the term solid wastes, is not used in this text. Food waste The animal, fruit, or vegetable residues resulting from the handling, preparation, and eating of foods (also called garbage). Characteristics: they are highly putrescible (易腐烂的)and will decompose rapidly, especially in warm weather. Decomposition will lead to the development of offensive (讨厌的)odors. In many locations, the putresible nature of these wastes will significantly influence the design and operation of the solid waste collection system. In addition to the amounts of food wastes generated at residences, considerable amounts are generated at cafeterias and restaurants, large institutional facilities such as hospitals and prisons, and facilities associated with the marketing of foods, including wholesale (批发)and retail (零售)stores and markets. Rubbish Rubbish consists of combustible (易燃的)and noncombustible (不燃的)solid wastes of household, institutions, commercial activities, etc. excluding food wastes or other highly putrescible (易腐烂的) material. Typically, combustible rubbish consists of materials such as paper, cardboard, plastics, textiles, rubber, leather, wood, furniture, and garden trimmings.
