CHAPTER THREE APA Editorial Style (APA的編輯格式) 賴彥錚 M9917911 ※When editors or typesetters refer to style, they usually do not mean writing Style(寫作格式); they mean editorial style(編輯格式)-the rules or guidelines a publisher observes to ensure clear, consistent presentation of the printed word(印刷字). Editorial style concerns uniform use of … punctuation and abbreviations construction of tables selection of headings citation of references many other elements that are part of every manuscript. ※An author writing for a publication must follow the style rules established by the publisher to avoid inconsistencies among journal articles or book chapters. e.g. sub-test, subtest, and Subtest Punctuation(標點符號) Punctuation establishes the cadence of a sentence, telling the reader where to pause (comma, semicolon, and colon), stop (period and question mark), or take a detour (dash, parentheses, and brackets; Nurnberg, 1972). Punctuation of a sentence usually denotes a pause in thought; different kinds of punctuation indicate different kinds and lengths of pauses. 3.01 Period(句號) Use a period to end a complete sentence. 3.02 Comma(逗號) ※between elements (including before and and or) in a series of three or more items. (See section 3.33 for use of commas in numbered or lettered series.) e.g. the height, width, or depth ※to set off a nonessential (非必要)or nonrestrictive clause(非限定子句) e.g. Switch A, which was on a panel, controlled the recording device. ※to separate two independent clauses(獨立子句)joined by a conjunction(連接詞). Cedar shavings covered the floor, and paper was available for shredding and nest building. ※to set off(隔開)the year in exact dates. e.g. April 18, 1992, was the correct date. but April 1992 was the correct month. ※to set off the year in parenthetical(圓括弧)reference citations. e.g. (Patrick, 1993) ※to separate groups of three digits in most numbers of 1,000 or more e.g. 1,000、1,987,654 ※Do not use a comma:to separate parts of measurement. e.g. 8 years 2 months
