Working with Spoken Chinese by Hongyin Tao, UCLA Unit: People and Personalities About the Audio Clip In this audio clip you will hear two female speakers describing a picture of a group of children and their teacher. Notable Features of this Conversation: In everyday conversations, people express personal opinions on a wide range of subjects. However, not all opinions are expressed in the same manner. For example, some opinions are framed strongly while others rather tentatively, depending on the conversation partner and the subjects at hand. During the course of interaction, the speaker may modify his or her expressions so as to adjust to the flow of interaction. The listener, on the other hand, also needs to react to the opinions being offered by the speaker and shows agreement or disagreement. Learning Goals: In the unit “People and Personalities” you will work with authentic spoken language and learn and practice:  how opinions are framed  how speakers express an opinion with different degrees of certainty  how to express personal interests and emotional states (moods)  how the listener (F2) reacts to the main speaker (F1).
