Nissan Engineering Standard Low Temperature Testing Methods for N E S Rubber, Vulcanized or Thermoplastic 1. SCOPE This NES specifies the methods for determining the low temperature characteristics, namely, 50% impact brittleness temperature, threshold temperature for impact brittleness, torsional rigidity and elasticity recovery temperature for vulcanized rubber and thermoplastic rubber (hereinafter, collectively called as vulcanized rubber). 2. DEFINITIONS The major terms used in this Standard, unless otherwise specified in NES M 0151 and NES M 0512, are listed as follows. a) 50% impact brittleness temperature The temperature at which 50% of the total number of specimens in a test fractured when the specimens are subjected to impact bending under the specified conditions. Here, fracture means tearing, cracking and/or holes that are visible to the naked eye, and/or complete separation into two or more fragments. b) Threshold temperature for impact brittleness The lowest temperature at which destruction of a specimen does not occur when the specimen is subjected to impact bending under specified conditions. c) Impact testing velocity The relative velocity between fixed specimen and striker at the time of impact. 3. TEST TYPES Low temperature tests for vulcanized rubber shall consist of the following three types. a) Low temperature impact brittleness test b) Low temperature torsion test (Gehman torsion test) c) Low temperature elasticity recovery test (TR test) 4. LOW TEMPERATURE IMPACT BRITTLENESS TEST 4.1 Objective This test shall be conducted to determine the 50% threshold temperature for impact brittleness by checking presence or no presence of fractures on the specimens after the specimens are subjected to impact bending under the specified conditions. 4.2 Testing equipment 4.2.1 Outl
