STILL/LIFE Benedicte Guillon STILL/LIFE A photo essay by Benedicte Guillon The Little I Know About China I took these photos during my trip in China. Of all my travels last year, I dont think I ever felt more lost than in this place of the world. I didn’t understand anything, the people, the language, the signs. I just couldn’t read a map or a restaurant menu. My relation and understanding of Beijing has thus been very silent and emotional. If someone were to ask me what I learnt over there, I think I would show them these pictures. The light, the textures, the way it looks staged (but isn’t), and the way how everything has its own utility and place There’s a kind of beautiful symmetry and composition I could find everywhere in these hutongs that look like big chaos at first sight, but once entered into the observation of things, I realised how every detail was perfectly ordered and organised. Of all the street shots I took over there, I think that my “Hutong Still Life” series is the one that really shows me who Beijigners really are. The little i know about China stands in these few photographs. Ces photos ont été prises lors de mon voyage en Chine l’année dernière. De tous les endroits que j’ai eu la chance de découvrir, Pékin est sûrement la ville qui m’a le plus désorientée. Ne parlant pas la langue, j’ai éprouvé la perte totale de mes repères. Mon incompréhension par rapport aux gens, à la vie citadine, et aux informations inaccessibles, a fait de mon approche du lieu une expérience silencieuse et émotionnelle. Si je devais parler de ce que j’ai appris ou compris là-bas, je pense que je montrerai cette série de photos. La lumière, les textures, la façon dont chaque chose semble avoir son utilité et occuper sa juste place...
